SO HOW MUCH IS THIS LITTLE
ADVENTURE GOING TO COST ?
Well
it depends on a lot of stuff. I sort of have this figure in my head of about $40,000 AUD a year. I know there are some purist
cruisers out there who will say that’s a bit decadent but if we want to experience the places we visit other than the
coastline we are going to have to occasionally use marinas, rent cars, eat out and stay in motels, all of which cost money.
A lot of cruisers opt not to take out insurance on there boats due to the expense and for go medical insurance. We
have decided that we will insure the boat and ourselves. Cruising sailboats are complicated things (don’t let anyone
tell you otherwise) unless you want to sail around the world hand steering on a motor less boat drinking warm beer (no fridge)
with a bucket as a bilge pump no thanks. Cruising sailboats have radars, wind vanes, autopilots, gps, fridges, depth, speed
and wind instruments, solar panels, wind turbines, pressurised water, batteries to run all the above, motors ....the list
goes on, all of which are continually been challenged by the elements and the corrosive properties of salt water, all of which
can and do break and weather you are going to fix them yourself or get someone else to do it its going to cost you money.
Oh yes and sails too, here’s what’s left of our inner foresail after our Pittwater to Nelson bay passage.
Hate to think what this is going to cost to replace.

Every month I will document on this website what it is costing us in AUS dollars to
live onboard. We have a budget of $3300 per month, let’s see how close we can get. 30/6/09 and the first
month expenses are in. Are you sitting down?
June 2009 Groceries $1089 Entertainment $449 Alcohol $537 Fuel $472 Boat $1087 Transport $409 Marina $180 Other
$538 Total
$4761 AUD.
Being $1461.00 AUD over budget at this early stage is not ideal (excuse me while I fill my glass). Continuing
like this will result in an early return to the workforce and a premature end of something I'm really starting to like.
I can hear you $537 in alcohol in a month could be a little on the high side but what are freshly caught crabs
at lunch time without a couple of Heinekens each. The trouble is we think we're on holiday, are we?
On a more serious note we did have a couple of one off expenses which blew the budget. We have a very nice very large Simrad
chartplotter downstairs which is great when you're downstairs but totally useless when you are at the helm. We decided
it would be a wise move to purchase a small waterproof chartplotter for the helm. We got a Northstar 537 with external antenna
for $569 money well spent.
Other one off expenses this month included wet weather gear $150, clears for canvas
cockpit covers $60, web site set up and domain name $404, hard drive to back up computer $99, we also pumped a lot of diesel
into the tanks at Coffs Harbour so we should be ok for diesel for a while.
But at the end of the day it doesn't
matter how many excuses you make we simply overspent. We are determined to do better next month.

(it’s Christmas, now I just have to find excuses for the other eleven months of the year) (nothing
cheap about Sydney Taxis) (gps receiver for laptop $56, anodes $20, canvas to make cover for dingy $167, shock cord, thread
and bits $64) (had to leave the boat somewhere "cyclone safe" while we visited Sydney for Christmas.)
(plus we
used the rest of our frequent flyer points) (all those presents)

On top
of the above we also managed to withdraw $880 out of ATM machines during December where it went and what on I have no idea.
I guess it landed somewhere in the Entertainment / Alcohol section, who knows.
Total
$5804 (this includes the disappearing $880)
This is a very good reason why as unemployed
cruisers you need to avoid Christmas. Flying back to your home city every year because you think everybody really misses
you is an exspensive excercise and after 2 weeks you get that funny feeling that you never actually left. So next year we
have decided that everyone can come to us where ever we are.
